“Rise Against the Sword” (暴れ豪右衛門), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1966, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) C140
This is an original Japanese B2 movie poster printed in 1966 for the first theatrical release of Rise Against the Sword — Japanese title Abare Goemon (暴れ豪右衛門), an epic jidaigeki period drama produced and distributed by Toho.
Rise Against the Sword was directed by Hiroshi Inagaki (稲垣浩), one of the major figures of classic Japanese cinema and internationally known for his Samurai Trilogy. Set during Japan’s violent Warring States period, the film follows Goemon, a fierce peasant leader who raises a makeshift army of farmers against oppressive samurai forces. The story combines large-scale historical spectacle with the rebellious energy of a folk-hero narrative.
The film stars Toshirō Mifune, Makoto Satō, Ryō Tamura, and Nobuko Otowa. Mifune is prominently featured in the upper right of the poster on horseback, wearing dramatic warrior headgear, while the lower montage presents additional character portraits and battlefield imagery.
The design is a powerful example of mid-1960s Japanese samurai poster art. The enormous red brush-title 暴れ豪右衛門 dominates the left side, while the composition combines heroic portraiture, cavalry movement, and battlefield action. The result is bold, dynamic, and unmistakably theatrical — a strong display piece for collectors of Toshirō Mifune, Toho jidaigeki, and classic Japanese cinema.
