“Rocky” (ロッキー), Original Japanese First Release Movie Poster 1977, B3 Size (c. 36 × 51.5 cm) O635
This is an original Japanese B3 poster issued in Japan for the first domestic theatrical release of Rocky (1976), John G. Avildsen’s era-defining boxing drama—written by and starring Sylvester Stallone, alongside Talia Shire, Burt Young, Carl Weathers and Burgess Meredith. The film opened theatrically in Japan on 16 April 1977 (United Artists).
A modern American myth in its purest form, Rocky became a global phenomenon—winning the Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Film Editing—and remains one of the most beloved sports films ever made.
Poster design
A beautifully restrained, design-forward Japanese campaign: the enormous ROCKY title dominates the white field in warm gold, while a single silhouetted image—Rocky and Adrian walking hand-in-hand—captures the film’s emotional core in one quiet gesture. A line of Japanese copy under the title reads: *「15ラウンドを闘いぬくことに、ロッキーは永遠の愛をかけた…」 (“As he fights through 15 rounds, Rocky stakes his eternal love…”), turning the story into romance and resolve rather than mere combat.
A major bonus with this format: the reverse is fully printed with Japanese text and imagery (programme-style synopsis/cast/features), making it an especially appealing piece of original Japanese theatrical marketing ephemera.
