“Samurai Rebellion” (上意討ち 拝領妻始末), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1967, Toho First Release, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) K101

Sale price $150.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1967 for the first domestic theatrical release of Samurai Rebellion (上意討ち 拝領妻始末), directed by Masaki Kobayashi and produced/distributed by Toho. First-issue Japanese posters for Kobayashi’s anti-authoritarian jidai-geki—starring Toshirō Mifune—are highly collectible.

Film background
Kobayashi’s searing period drama centers on Isaburō Sasahara (Toshirō Mifune), a retainer whose family is forced to accept a former concubine of their lord as a bride to his son. When the couple fall genuinely in love and then defy the clan’s command to separate, Isaburō chooses principle over obedience, leading to tragic confrontation. Co-stars include Yōko Tsukasa and Tatsuya Nakadai. Frequently paired with Kobayashi’s Harakiri (1962), the film is celebrated for its moral clarity, rigorous compositions, and devastating finale.

Poster design
A striking country sheet: a giant monochrome close-up of Mifune’s face dominates the field, with three vignette stills arrayed along the header. The lower register stages a tense duel scene, while the bold vertical scarlet title 「上意討ち」 with the subtitle 「拝領妻始末」 commands the left column. Toho’s round seal appears at the upper right, and the Eirin rating mark is printed along the footer—classic hallmarks of a first-release poster with powerful wall presence.
