“Seven Samurai” (七人の侍), Ultra‑Rare Original Japanese B1×3 “Three‑Sheet” Re‑Release Poster — 1967 Toho International Version (R‑1967) — approx. 86 × 40 in (218 × 103 cm)
This panoramic Japanese cinema billboard—constructed from three overlapping B1 sheets—was issued by Toho for the 1967 re‑release of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai. It is the scarce International Version format (〈海外版〉) prepared for exhibition of the overseas cut in Japan during that reissue, and is among the most elusive Kurosawa posters in any size. The design is reproduced as a full double‑page plate (pp. 62–63) in Akira Kurosawa Film Poster Collection (Two Virgins, First Edition, 31 August 2025). Only a handful of surviving examples are known.
About the film
Directed by Akira Kurosawa.
Starring Toshirō Mifune, Takashi Shimura, Keiko Tsushima, Yukiko Shimazaki.
Premiered in 1954, Seven Samurai has become one of the most studied works in world cinema, celebrated for its character ensemble, narrative architecture, and action grammar (multi‑camera coverage, long lenses, and weather‑charged mise‑en‑scène) that reshaped the staging of battle sequences. Its influence extends from John Sturges’s The Magnificent Seven (1960) to contemporary epics.
Poster design
A sweeping photomontage carries the eye from a cavalry charge over wind‑combed hills to close‑quarter clashes, with a commanding warrior portrait anchoring the centre. Kurosawa’s director credit appears in yellow, while the scarlet title 七人の侍 strides across the base. A green, full‑width tag line crowns the composition. Format identifiers include the round Toho crest at upper left, “Printed in Japan © TOHO CO., Ltd. 1967” along the lower margin, and a boxed notice at lower right reading 〈海外版〉 映倫 67520 (International Version with Eirin censorship number), all consistent with the 1967 re‑release.
