“Solaris” (惑星ソラリス), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1977 (film 1972), B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) A183
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster produced for the first Japanese cinema release of Andrei Tarkovsky’s Solaris (惑星ソラリス), adapted from Stanisław Lem’s novel. The film was produced in 1972, and it first opened theatrically in Japan on 29 April 1977, distributed domestically by 日本海映画.
Regarded as one of the greatest works of philosophical science fiction, Solaris follows psychologist Kris Kelvin as he is sent to an orbiting station above the sentient ocean-planet “Solaris,” where the crew’s memories and grief begin to materialise in terrifying, intimate form. The film won the Jury Prize at the 1972 Cannes Film Festival, a point highlighted in the Japanese copy on this poster.
Poster design
A superb, austere Japanese design balancing minimalist black space with a collage of film stills: the large lavender title 惑星ソラリス dominates the upper field, while the lower half is anchored by the haunting image of Kelvin carrying Hari across the strange shoreline—one of the film’s most iconic visuals. The layout is pure 1970s Japanese arthouse presentation: elegant, severe, and exceptionally frameable.
It is over 49 years old!
