“Sonatine” / 「ソナチネ」, Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1993, Takeshi Kitano, Rare Cannes “Un Certain Regard” B2 Poster, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) Q288

Sale price $735.00

This is a rare original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for Sonatine (ソナチネ), Takeshi Kitano’s 1993 yakuza masterpiece and one of the defining Japanese films of the 1990s. This is the first time we have had this in stock for over 5 years.

This specific design is especially desirable because it features the film’s stark black-and-red Cannes presentation artwork, including the printed notice for its official selection at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section. It is one of the most visually severe and collectible posters associated with Kitano’s early international breakthrough.

Film background
Written and directed by Takeshi Kitano, Sonatine follows Murakawa, a weary Tokyo yakuza sent to Okinawa on what appears to be a routine gang assignment. Once there, the film gradually shifts from crime drama into something far stranger and more existential: a study of boredom, violence, waiting, play, and death.

Although the film was not a major commercial success in Japan on its initial release, it became one of the key works that established Kitano as an international auteur. Its later reputation grew substantially through festival recognition, critical support, and overseas cult appreciation. Today, Sonatine is widely regarded as one of Kitano’s great films and a major work of 1990s Japanese cinema.

Poster design
This Japanese B2 is a masterclass in negative space and restraint. The poster is dominated by a vast black field, giving the design a feeling of emptiness, silence, and fatalism — perfectly aligned with the film’s emotional atmosphere.

At the top, the title Sonatine appears in large blood-red gothic lettering, with the Japanese title ソナチネ above. The English production line beneath reads:

Produced by Kazuyoshi Okuyama / Written & Directed by Takeshi Kitano

The central vertical text announces:

「’93 カンヌ国際映画祭正式出品」
“Official Selection, 1993 Cannes International Film Festival.”

Beneath it is the red palm emblem and the section title:

UN CERTAIN REGARD

At lower left, a stark high-contrast monochrome image shows the film’s famous gun-to-head motif, an image that has become closely associated with Sonatine’s mixture of deadpan humour, existential violence, and fatalistic calm.

The lower-right credits identify producer Kazuyoshi Okuyama and director / screenwriter Takeshi Kitano, with additional production credits printed in white against the black ground.

Collector significance
This is a particularly important poster for collectors of:

Takeshi Kitano cinema
Japanese yakuza film posters
1990s international art cinema
Cannes Film Festival-related material
Japanese minimalist poster design
cult and auteur film ephemera

The poster’s importance lies in its connection to the moment Kitano’s international reputation began to crystallise. It is a physical artefact of the film’s Cannes presentation and of the transition from “Beat Takeshi” as a domestic television personality to Takeshi Kitano as a globally recognised filmmaker.

Among original Sonatine posters, this Cannes-marked black design is especially prized for its stark graphic power and direct association with the film’s festival breakthrough.
