“Star Wars: Return of the Jedi” / “Revenge of the Jedi” (スター・ウォーズ/ジェダイの復讐), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1983, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) A290
This is an original Japanese B2 movie poster printed in 1983 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, issued in Japan under its original campaign title ジェダイの復讐 (“Revenge of the Jedi”).
A highly collectible country-of-origin poster from the original release of the third film in George Lucas’s landmark trilogy, this example is especially desirable for two reasons: first, it preserves the film’s now-withdrawn “Revenge of the Jedi” release identity; second, it carries Roxy cinema provenance, with the green 金沢ロキシー / Kanazawa Roxy theatre sticker still affixed to the front, giving the piece an added layer of period exhibition history.
Film background
Released in 1983, Return of the Jedi brought the original Star Wars trilogy to its climactic conclusion, uniting the final struggle against the Empire with the deeply personal confrontation between Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, and the Emperor. Directed by Richard Marquand and produced by George Lucas, the film stars Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels, and Peter Mayhew, and remains one of the defining blockbuster finales of the twentieth century.
For collectors, Japanese posters for the first trilogy have long held a special appeal, and the “Revenge of the Jedi” title variant is particularly significant, preserving a brief but famous phase of the film’s original international marketing before the title was changed.
Poster design
This is one of the most elegant and instantly recognisable Japanese campaign designs for the film. The composition is built around a single hand gripping a lightsaber, its blade rising vertically through the centre of the image into a brilliant starburst at the top edge. Around it, deep black space and a subtle cosmic field create a sense of monumental scale and calm theatrical drama.
The design is framed by a fine border, with the bold red header announcing the film as the third and concluding chapter in the series. At the bottom, the large pale-blue スター・ウォーズ title is paired with the vivid red subtitle ジェダイの復讐, giving the poster a striking and unmistakably early-1980s graphic identity.
Most notably, this example retains the green Kanazawa Roxy theatre sticker across the lower image area. Rather than detracting, this gives the poster authentic cinema provenance and reinforces its status as a genuine surviving theatrical display piece from the original Japanese run.
Rarity and collectability
Original Japanese first-release posters for the original Star Wars trilogy are consistently sought after, and examples with theatre provenance are particularly evocative. The use of the abandoned “Revenge of the Jedi” title makes this a historically important release poster, while the Roxy provenance adds a layer of documentary exhibition history that many collectors value highly.
