An exceptional original Japanese B1 theatrical poster for Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983), the climactic final chapter of George Lucas’ original Star Wars trilogy.

Produced for the film’s original Japanese theatrical release on 2 July 1983, this imposing large-format B1 features the celebrated Style A “Lightsaber” artwork by Tim Reamer, with design by Paykos Phior. Directed by Richard Marquand and starring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher, Return of the Jedi brought the original trilogy to its spectacular conclusion and remains one of the defining works of modern popular cinema.

The “Lightsaber” Design

Against a deep, star-filled expanse of space, Luke Skywalker’s hands grip an ignited lightsaber, its brilliant blue-white blade rising vertically through the composition before exploding into a radiant starburst. A wash of cool blue light illuminates the left side of the image, while the surrounding darkness gives the design its extraordinary clarity and visual force.

The poster’s radical simplicity distinguishes it from the more densely populated montage designs normally associated with blockbuster cinema. There are no conventional portraits of the principal cast and no extended action montage—only the lightsaber, the stars and the symbolic triumph of light over darkness. The result feels less like conventional advertising and more like a modern mythic emblem.

A fine turquoise border frames the central artwork, with the small English RETURN OF THE JEDI logo positioned inside the lower-right corner. Beneath it, the enormous aqua Japanese lettering 「スター・ウォーズ」 is paired with the original red subtitle 「ジェダイの復讐」, creating one of the most powerful typographic treatments found on any Japanese Star Wars poster.

Across the top, the vivid red campaign line reads:

「STAR WARS シリーズ第3弾⇒完結篇！」

—announcing the third instalment and concluding chapter of the Star Wars series.

The Original Japanese Title

This poster preserves the film’s original 1983 Japanese title, 『ジェダイの復讐』—“Revenge of the Jedi.” Although the English title had been changed from Revenge of the Jedi to Return of the Jedi before the film’s international release, Japan retained the established 「ジェダイの復讐」 title throughout the original theatrical campaign.

The Japanese title was not officially standardised as 「ジェダイの帰還」—“Return of the Jedi”—until the 2004 trilogy DVD release. The coexistence of the English RETURN OF THE JEDI logo and the historic Japanese ジェダイの復讐 title makes original Japanese advertising from 1983 especially distinctive and highly desirable to collectors.

Rarity and Collector Significance

The Japanese B1 format measures approximately 72.8 × 103 cm, giving it twice the surface area of the standard Japanese B2. B1 posters were intended for prominent theatrical display and were produced and distributed in considerably smaller numbers than their B2 counterparts.

This Japanese B1 “Lightsaber” design appears exceptionally infrequently, particularly in strong, unrestored condition. Its large dimensions also make surviving examples more vulnerable to handling, edge damage and loss. The expansive black field further means that even minor wear is readily visible, making a well-preserved example especially difficult to locate.

Combining Reamer’s internationally recognised artwork with bold, country-specific Japanese typography and the historically important 「ジェダイの復讐」 title, this is an outstanding centrepiece for an advanced Star Wars or Japanese movie-poster collection.

Condition

Excellent condition. The poster was previously folded once horizontally and has subsequently been carefully stored flat. The single original central fold remains visible, with very minor wear and small colour breaks along portions of the crease.

Otherwise, the poster presents exceptionally well. The colours remain rich and unfaded, the large black field retains excellent depth, and the artwork and typography remain crisp and vibrant. 

There are no significant tears, areas of paper loss, staining or writing apparent. The poster remains unbacked and unrestored and, once professionally framed, will display as an exceptionally impressive piece of original Star Wars theatrical artwork.
