“Steamboy” (スチームボーイ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 2004, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA78
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 2004 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Steamboy (スチームボーイ), the long‑gestating steampunk adventure directed by Katsuhiro Otomo and distributed by Toho. Following Akira, Steamboy marked Otomo’s return to feature‑length animation after more than a decade.
Film background
Set in an alternate 19th‑century England on the eve of the Great Exhibition, the film follows young inventor Ray Steam after his grandfather sends him a mysterious spherical device containing a new high‑pressure energy source. Caught between rival industrialists—and his own father—over how the “Steamball” should be used, Ray is drawn into a spectacular conflict that questions progress, militarism and the true cost of technological innovation. With lavish backgrounds and complex mechanical designs, it became one of the most expensive Japanese animated films ever made at the time.
Poster design
The poster presents Ray in close‑up, clad in red flight gear and goggles, cradling the ominously hissing Steamball against a backdrop of smoky Victorian London stretching into the distance. The Japanese title 「スチームボーイ」 spans the top in clean white type, with the English subtitle “an adventure story of STEAMBOY” beneath it. Vertical copy near Ray’s hands declares his determination not to give up on the future, hinting at the film’s hopeful undercurrent. The overall composition combines earthy steampunk machinery with bright, youthful determination—a strong single‑character image that became the film’s signature key art.
