“Supergirl” (スーパーガール), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1984, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) Q210

Sale price $100.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1984 for the first theatrical release of Supergirl (スーパーガール), the DC Comics fantasy-adventure film starring Helen Slater in her breakthrough title role. The film also features Faye Dunaway, Peter O’Toole, Mia Farrow, Brenda Vaccaro, Hart Bochner, and Marc McClure, with McClure reprising his role as Jimmy Olsen from the Superman film series.

Original Japanese posters for Supergirl are highly collectible, and this example is especially desirable for its bright, pop-fantasy Japanese campaign design, which differs strongly from many Western release posters.

Film background
Released in 1984, Supergirl follows Kara Zor-El as she travels from Argo City to Earth in search of the powerful Omegahedron. Taking on the identity of Linda Lee, she discovers her powers while confronting the ambitious sorceress Selena, played by Faye Dunaway.

The film occupies a distinctive place in 1980s superhero cinema as one of the earliest major female-led comic-book features. Its mixture of fantasy, adventure, school-life comedy, and comic-book spectacle gives it a cult appeal, particularly among collectors of DC Comics, vintage superhero cinema, and 1980s genre posters.

Poster design
This Japanese B2 uses a vibrant and energetic layout created specifically for the Japanese market. The central image shows Helen Slater as Supergirl flying directly toward the viewer, her red cape billowing behind her against a glowing orange sky. The image has a soft, airbrushed fantasy quality, giving the poster a bright and optimistic tone.

Across the top, the huge Japanese title スーパーガール is printed in bold hot-pink lettering with a green outline, immediately giving the sheet strong 1980s graphic impact. Beneath the title is a row of circular cast portraits, introducing the supporting ensemble to Japanese audiences. The English Supergirl logo appears in a tilted metallic style near the upper centre.

The lower section adds further pop-art energy: a still of the villainess Selena appears at lower left, while a colourful skyline, stars, and graphic bursts stretch across the bottom. The Japanese tagline reads:

「バキッと初登場!この夏、少女はヒーローになる。」
“Making a striking debut! This summer, a young girl becomes a hero.”

The result is a highly displayable Japanese release poster: colourful, optimistic, and unmistakably 1980s.
