“Addams Family Values” / 「アダムス・ファミリー2」, Original First Release Japanese Movie Poster 1993, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA662
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the first Japanese release of Addams Family Values, issued in Japan under the title 「アダムス・ファミリー2」. Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, the film is the acclaimed sequel to The Addams Family, returning the macabre household to the screen with even sharper wit, darker humour, and one of the most beloved comic performances of 1990s studio cinema.
Stylish, eccentric, and instantly recognisable, Addams Family Values is widely regarded by many viewers as not merely a successful sequel, but in some respects the superior film: more sardonic, more confidently bizarre, and more fully in command of its gothic-comic world.
Film background
Released in 1993, Addams Family Values reunites Raul Julia, Anjelica Huston, Christopher Lloyd, Christina Ricci, Jimmy Workman, and Carel Struycken, with Carol Kane joining the ensemble as Grandmama.
The story centres on the arrival of baby Pubert Addams, the growing tensions of domestic life in the Addams household, and the scheming of Debbie Jellinsky, a glamorous serial killer who marries Uncle Fester in pursuit of his fortune. At the same time, Wednesday and Pugsley are dispatched to an oppressively cheerful summer camp, leading to some of the film’s most memorable and darkly comic scenes.
Critically, the film was very warmly received and has since developed an especially strong reputation. Joan Cusack’s performance as Debbie was widely praised, and the film earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Art Direction. Today it stands as one of the defining gothic comedies of the decade.
Poster design
This Japanese B2 design is especially appealing and differs in a notable way from the more familiar Western campaign materials. The full Addams clan is arranged in a formal ensemble portrait on a black-and-white chequered floor, framed by a cracked stone interior, draped purple curtains, and decorative gothic detailing that gives the whole composition the feel of an aristocratic haunted portrait.
At the centre stand Gomez and Morticia, flanked by Wednesday, Pugsley, Uncle Fester, Grandmama, and Lurch. One of the most distinctive features is the infant figure held at the centre of the composition: in place of openly revealing the baby’s face, the Japanese design overlays it with a bold red question mark, turning Pubert into a comic mystery and giving the poster a charmingly local marketing twist.
The large headline at the top reads:
「もっと不気味におかしい」
“Even more weirdly funny” / “More spookily hilarious”
Along the right side appears the familiar teasing line:
「私たちってどこかヘンですか…」
“What part of us is strange…?”
The title 「アダムス・ファミリー2」 is rendered prominently in bold orange-red type above the English title treatment, standing out strongly against the pale, cracked background. A tiny pair of glowing eyes peering from a mousehole at the lower right provides an additional visual joke, replacing the more obvious foreground use of Thing seen in other Addams campaign imagery. Altogether, it is a beautifully balanced and highly characterful Japanese design: theatrical, gothic, humorous, and unmistakably of its period.
