“The Brother from Another Planet” (ブラザー・フロム・アナザー・プラネット), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1984, B2 Size (51 x 73cm) O159A
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster produced for the Japanese release of The Brother from Another Planet (ブラザー・フロム・アナザー・プラネット), the 1984 American science fiction comedy-drama directed and written by John Sayles, starring Joe Morton. The Japanese theatrical distribution was handled by Eurospace, one of Japan’s important distributors of independent and international cinema.
Film background
Released in 1984, The Brother from Another Planet is one of John Sayles’ most distinctive early films: a low-budget, politically sharp, and quietly humanist science fiction story set in Harlem. Joe Morton plays “The Brother,” a mute extraterrestrial fugitive who lands in New York and is taken in by the local community. Blending science fiction, social commentary, comedy, and immigrant allegory, the film became a significant work of American independent cinema in the 1980s.
Poster design
A striking and unusually restrained Japanese campaign design, centred on a pencil-style illustration of Joe Morton’s character, standing alone in oversized, draped clothing against a pale field. The minimal composition gives the poster a quiet, almost gallery-like presence, far removed from conventional science fiction advertising. The vertical Japanese taglines add to the film’s offbeat tone: 「まるで黒人のような宇宙人が、ハーレムに落ちてきた!」 — “An alien who looks just like a Black man has fallen into Harlem!” — and 「地球もまだまだ捨てたものじゃない。」 — “The Earth is not yet something to be thrown away.” The illustration was created by Scott Gustafson, whose soft, textured drawing style gives the poster a warm, humanist quality entirely suited to Sayles’ film.
