“The End of Evangelion” (新世紀エヴァンゲリオン劇場版 Air/まごころを、君に), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1997, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) A189 A
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1997 for the first Japanese theatrical release of The End of Evangelion (新世紀エヴァンゲリオン劇場版 Air/まごころを、君に), directed by Hideaki Anno and Kazuya Tsurumaki and distributed in Japan by Toei Company. Conceived as an alternate cinematic ending to the landmark television series Neon Genesis Evangelion, the film concludes the story begun in the series’ final episodes with an ambitious, apocalyptic finale.
Film background
Picking up after episode 24 of the TV series, The End of Evangelion follows Shinji Ikari, the traumatized pilot of Evangelion Unit‑01, as the shadowy organization Seele launches a direct assault on Nerv headquarters to seize control of the Human Instrumentality Project. While Misato struggles to protect Shinji and coax him back into the cockpit, Asuka stages a last stand in Unit‑02 and Gendo attempts to reunite with his deceased wife through his own version of Instrumentality. The film’s second half plunges into surreal, psychological territory as Third Impact unfolds, exploring themes of depression, identity, human connection and the will to live. Widely regarded as one of the greatest animated films of all time, it remains a defining work of late‑1990s anime. Wikipedia
Poster design
This B2 poster takes a collage approach that mirrors the film’s fractured psyche. Set against a dark, text‑covered background filled with layered Japanese phrases in metallic purples and blacks, a grid of stills from the movie floats like memory fragments. A large, calm close‑up of Rei Ayanami dominates the centre, surrounded by smaller images of Shinji, Asuka, Misato, Gendo and other key characters, along with Evangelion units and apocalyptic imagery. At the top left, a small panel reading “IKARI YUI 1977–2004” evokes one of the film’s gravestone shots, while vivid scenes of battle and destruction punctuate the otherwise somber layout. The English title THE END OF EVANGELION runs boldly along the bottom edge in embossed, metallic lettering, giving the design a funereal yet prestigious feel appropriate to this “final” chapter.
