“THE END OF EVANGELION” / “新世紀エヴァンゲリオン劇場版 Air / まごころを、君に” – Original Japanese Theatrical Poster 1997, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) E179

Sale price $200.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1997 for the release of The End of Evangelion, the landmark feature-film conclusion to Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Released at the height of the Evangelion phenomenon, The End of Evangelion remains one of the most important and uncompromising anime films ever made. Directed by Hideaki Anno, the film reimagines and expands the ending of the television series through Air and My Purest Heart for You, transforming the franchise’s final movement into an intense, apocalyptic, and psychologically charged cinematic experience.

Poster design

This is one of the most iconic and unsettling Evangelion poster designs ever produced. The composition is dominated by a violent field of saturated reds and oranges, suggesting the sea of Instrumentality, with floating and contorted human forms drifting beneath a glowing moon. The imagery is at once abstract and corporeal, and perfectly captures the film’s themes of ego dissolution, despair, identity, and the collapse of boundaries between self and others.

Across the top appears the haunting Japanese line:

「だから みんな、死んでしまえばいいのに…」
“So I wish everyone would just die…”

At centre, the poster poses the question:

「では、あなたは何故、ココにいるの?」
“Then, why are you here?”

And just above the title, another line reads:

「…ココにいても、いいの?」
“…Is it okay to be here?”

The left-side vertical block of text lists a dense sequence of emotional and psychological states—fear, anxiety, separation, rejection, desire, collapse, loneliness, delusion, and dissolution—functioning almost as a condensed map of the film’s internal landscape. This makes the design not simply promotional, but conceptually inseparable from the work itself.

At the bottom, the title is set in bold serif lettering:

THE END OF EVANGELION

with the Japanese subtitle:

新世紀エヴァンゲリオン劇場版 Air / まごころを、君に

The result is a poster of extraordinary impact: minimal in structure, overwhelming in mood, and instantly recognisable to collectors of anime and Japanese cinema alike.

Collector significance

Original Japanese first-release Evangelion posters are now firmly established as major modern anime collectibles, and The End of Evangelion material stands among the most sought-after of the entire franchise. This particular design is especially desirable because it is not merely character-based or decorative; it is one of the defining visual statements of the film itself.

It appeals on multiple levels: Evangelion collectors, anime poster collectors, and buyers interested in 1990s Japanese graphic design or psychologically charged film advertising.
