“The Goonies” (グーニーズ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1985, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) – Noriyoshi Ohrai Artwork I227 B
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1985 for the first Japanese theatrical release of The Goonies, featuring spectacular artwork by legendary illustrator Noriyoshi Ohrai.
Film background
Produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Richard Donner, The Goonies follows a group of kids from the “Goon Docks” neighbourhood who discover an old pirate map and set off on a wild underground adventure to find One‑Eyed Willy’s treasure. Packed with booby traps, villains and 80s charm, the film has become one of the most beloved family adventure movies of all time and a defining title for that decade.
Poster design
Noriyoshi Ohrai’s composition is one of the most famous images associated with the film. The Goonies cluster together, hanging from a rope above a shimmering mountain of gold and jewels, with the wreck of a pirate ship and a skull‑topped mound of treasure below them. The entire scene is bathed in radiant yellows and oranges, creating a sense of danger and wonder. Japanese typography and the red “Goonies” title sit beneath the artwork, letting Ohrai’s dramatic painting dominate the piece.
Ohrai’s posters are highly coveted in their own right, and The Goonies is among the most sought‑after thanks to its subject matter and explosive colour scheme. Japanese B2s for the film were never printed in huge numbers, and examples in top grade are increasingly difficult to source.
