The Hidden Fortress (隠し砦の三悪人)", Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1958, Local-City Version, Ultra Rare, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm)

Sale price $4,750.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1958 for the first release of The Hidden Fortress (隠し砦の三悪人), Akira Kurosawa’s legendary jidaigeki adventure, produced and distributed by Toho. Featuring Toshiro Mifune as General Makabe Rokurōta and Misa Uehara as Princess Yuki, this landmark film is one of Kurosawa’s most influential works and directly inspired George Lucas in his creation of Star Wars.

Film background
Kurosawa’s rousing adventure follows two bickering peasants who unwittingly aid a general and a princess escaping through enemy territory with hidden gold. The film introduced Misa Uehara, whom Kurosawa championed as a new star; Toho’s marketing put her front‑and‑center, a strategy widely credited with powering the film’s commercial impact.

Poster design

  • Bold TOHOscope ribbon in sky‑blue crowns the composition.

  • Monumental red brush title 「隠し砦の三悪人」 (Kakushi‑toride no san‑akunin) runs vertically at left; at far left, 「黒沢明監督作品」 identifies the director.

  • Right‑side tagline in blue: 「姫の生命か!黄金か! 豪快!凄絶の大スペクタル巨篇!」—“The princess’s life or the gold? A roaring, intense, giant spectacle!”

  • Photomontage centers Princess Yuki (Misa Uehara), arm raised with spear, driving the campaign’s star‑making focus; the ragged peasants charge behind her.

  • Red credit block mid‑right with principal cast/crew.

  • Local‑city issue by 東京映画宣材社; paper, inks, and layout correspond to the 1958 first‑release materials.

Condition (carefully graded from your photos)

  • Overall: Very Good (VG), strong presentation and colour, folded as issued.

  • Folds: Horizontal and vertical folds

  • Paper: Even age‑toning; back shows typical oxidation/handling; no tape.

  • Edges/Corners: Minor edge nicks, tiny tear (imagery provided)

  • Surface: Clean image field with crisp registration; a few small handling creases and trivial specks consistent with age.

  • Verso: Clean, no writing; fold pattern visible (photo supplied).

Age & authenticity
Guaranteed original 1958 Japanese B2 from the first‑release TOHOscope campaign, documented as the Local‑City Version (半裁:ローカル版) by Tokyo Eiga Senzai‑sha, with period typography, TOHOscope crest, B2 dimensions (728 × 515 mm), and quarter‑folds typical of Toho distribution. Includes Japan Poster Shop Certificate of Authenticity.

Rarity
This Local‑City B2 is very seldom seen relative to the national style variants. Survival is low; examples almost never surface on the open market. An outstanding opportunity for Kurosawa/Toho completists and for collectors of Japanese widescreen (TOHOscope) campaigns.

It is over 67 years old.

It is not a reproduction or a reprint.
