“The Hitcher” / 「ヒッチャー」, Original Japanese Movie Poster 1986, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA938

Sale price $135.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1986 for The Hitcher / 「ヒッチャー」, the cult road-horror thriller directed by Robert Harmon and starring Rutger Hauer, C. Thomas Howell, and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

A superbly atmospheric Japanese poster for one of the defining American highway thrillers of the 1980s, this design captures the film’s bleak, rain-soaked terror with unusual restraint and power. It is especially desirable for collectors of Rutger Hauer, 1980s horror, and cult road-movie cinema.

Film background
Released in 1986, The Hitcher follows young driver Jim Halsey, who makes the fatal mistake of picking up a mysterious hitchhiker while crossing the American desert. The stranger, John Ryder, reveals himself to be a relentless and sadistic killer, drawing Jim into a terrifying cat-and-mouse ordeal across the highway.

Directed by Robert Harmon from a screenplay by Eric Red, the film has become a cult classic, admired for its sparse storytelling, nightmarish road imagery, and Rutger Hauer’s chilling performance as John Ryder—one of the most memorable screen villains of the decade.

Poster design
The Japanese poster is stark, elegant, and deeply ominous. Rather than using graphic violence, it focuses on anticipation: a lone figure, seen from behind, stands on the roadside in a long coat, thumb raised to hitchhike. In the distance, two headlights glow through mist and rain, suggesting that the terror has already begun.

The vertical text on the left reads:

「雨上がりのフリー・ウェイ
男は待っている……そして、恐怖のドライブが始まった。」

“A highway after the rain.
The man is waiting… and the drive of terror has begun.”

The bold purple copy on the right reads:

「地獄に触れる。青春の最終章」
“Touching hell. The final chapter of youth.”

At the lower right, the English title THE HITCHER appears in a ragged white brush-style logo, with the Japanese title 「ヒッチャー」 printed in red beneath. The overall effect is tense, minimal, and highly cinematic—perfectly matching the film’s atmosphere of isolation, pursuit, and psychological dread.
