“Romancing the Stone” (ロマンシング・ストーン 秘宝の谷), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1984, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA908

Sale price $115.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster produced for the 1984 first theatrical release of Romancing the Stone, directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, and Danny DeVito. Distributed in Japan by 20th Century Fox, this romantic adventure combines jungle escapades, treasure hunting, and sharp comedy.

Film background
Kathleen Turner plays Joan Wilder, a romance novelist whose sheltered life changes dramatically when her sister is kidnapped in Colombia. Travelling there with a treasure map demanded by the kidnappers, Joan finds herself stranded in the jungle, where she encounters resourceful adventurer Jack Colton, played by Michael Douglas.

Their uneasy partnership develops into romance as they navigate dangerous terrain, rival treasure hunters, and the pursuit of a priceless emerald. Written by Diane Thomas, the film brings Joan’s fictional world of peril and romance vividly into her own life.

Poster design
This Japanese design combines a central painted adventure scene with a surrounding collage of film stills. Douglas and Turner swing together on a vine, their figures extending beyond the illustration’s cream-coloured frame. Behind them, a suspension bridge crosses a dramatic gorge illuminated by shafts of golden light.

The surrounding photographs create a lively visual account of the adventure: jungle crossings, muddy escapes, dancing, and close-ups of the stars. Repeated waterfall images run down the upper-right edge, with one photograph tilted diagonally to heighten the sense of movement.

Across the upper centre, the large pink Japanese title contrasts with the green subtitle 「秘宝の谷」, meaning “Valley of Hidden Treasure.” The combination of painted imagery, photographic scenes, and colourful typography captures the film’s blend of danger, humour, and romance.

Condition
Excellent. Light handling creases and gentle paper undulations are visible, particularly on the reverse, with minor edge wear. The illustration and photographic montage retain strong colour and display appeal.
