"The Kindred (キンドレッド)", Original Japanese Movie Poster 1987, First Release, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) N185
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1987 for the first theatrical release of The Kindred (キンドレッド), a cult horror–sci-fi hybrid directed by Jeffrey Obrow and Stephen Carpenter. Japanese posters for niche 1980s horror films are rare and sought-after, especially for titles that developed a strong following among collectors of creature features and practical-effects cinema.
Film background
The Kindred tells the story of a young scientist who uncovers the dark secrets of his late mother’s genetic experiments, only to discover a monstrous half-human, half-creature “brother.” With its mix of mad science, grotesque mutations, and creature-horror thrills, the film fits squarely within the 1980s wave of practical-effects driven monster movies. The film starred David Allen Brooks, Amanda Pays (Max Headroom), and veteran actress Kim Hunter (Oscar-winner for A Streetcar Named Desire). Although not a mainstream hit, The Kindred developed a reputation among horror fans for its inventive creature design and disturbing body-horror sequences.
Poster design
The Japanese first release poster is striking and unsettling, featuring a grotesque mutant baby submerged inside a milk bottle, peering out with menacing eyes — a disturbing image that perfectly encapsulates the film’s themes of science gone wrong and monstrous birth. Surrounding stills showcase moments of terror and grotesque transformation, while the bold red Japanese title 「キンドレッド」 dominates the lower half of the design. The tagline and composition emphasize both the mad-science premise and the sheer horror spectacle, making this poster an excellent example of 1980s Japanese horror advertising.
