“The Last American Hero” / 「ラスト・アメリカン・ヒーロー」, Original Japanese Movie Poster 1973, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) A255

Sale price $100.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the Japanese release of The Last American Hero / 「ラスト・アメリカン・ヒーロー」, Lamont Johnson’s 1973 stock-car racing drama starring Jeff Bridges.

Inspired by Tom Wolfe’s celebrated writing on legendary driver and former moonshine runner Junior Johnson, the film offers an unusually authentic portrait of Southern racing culture, individual ambition, and resistance to corporate control.

Film background

The film follows Elroy Jackson Jr., a talented and fiercely independent young driver from rural North Carolina. Elroy initially uses his exceptional driving ability to transport illegal moonshine and evade the authorities.

After his father is arrested, he turns to professional stock-car racing, hoping to support his family and build a legitimate career. His natural talent quickly attracts attention, but success brings new pressures from sponsors, promoters, and team owners who expect him to surrender some of the independence that made him exceptional.

Directed by Lamont Johnson, the screenplay was written by William Roberts, based on Tom Wolfe’s account of American racing legend Junior Johnson. The film stars Jeff Bridges, Valerie Perrine, Geraldine Fitzgerald, and Ned Beatty.

The film was praised for its unvarnished depiction of working-class Southern life and stock-car racing, as well as Bridges’s charismatic and physically committed central performance.

Poster design

The poster uses a densely layered montage combining American national imagery, motorsport photography, and portraiture.

Across the top, a billowing American flag dominates the composition. Beneath it appears an enormous translucent close-up of Jeff Bridges’s eyes behind racing goggles, merging the driver’s intense expression with images of speed, competition, and machinery.

At left, a large tachometer reinforces the mechanical energy of the design. Below, a field of brightly coloured stock cars races around a crowded track, including the prominent blue number 43 car in the foreground.

The lower-left section shows Bridges in full racing gear holding a trophy, accompanied by Valerie Perrine. The combination of documentary-style racing imagery and heightened graphic collage gives the poster a distinctly Japanese interpretation of 1970s American culture.

The green text near the upper centre reads:

「正義が何処にある
真実が何処にある
権力なんかぶっとばせ!
ストックカー・レースに全てを賭けた
若者の憤りにも似た魂の叫びに
今、アメリカが燃えてゆく」

“Where is justice? Where is truth? Blow away authority! America now burns with the passionate cry of young men who have staked everything on stock-car racing.”

The red vertical text along the right margin evokes the roar of engines, the excitement of the grandstands, and the determination of the young racer pursuing pride and heroic recognition.

The lower section is anchored by the large Japanese title:

「ラスト・アメリカン・ヒーロー」

The title is rendered in bold red and purple lettering, accompanied by a chequered racing flag. The English title “THE LAST AMERICAN HERO” appears along the lower edge, beneath the principal cast credits.

Release note

This poster was printed for the film’s original Japanese theatrical release and distributed in Japan by 20th Century Fox.

It is an original period Japanese cinema poster, not a later reproduction or commercial reprint.

Condition

Very good+ condition. The poster retains strong colour, clear imagery, and excellent overall display impact.

There is age-related wear around the margins, including creasing, small edge tears, surface wear, and paper loss at the upper-right corner. These imperfections are visible in the detailed photographs and are consistent with an original Japanese theatrical poster from this period.

Despite these signs of use and age, the principal artwork, title, and credits remain complete and highly presentable.
