“The Man in the Iron Mask” (仮面の男), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1998, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) Q274
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the first Japanese release of The Man in the Iron Mask (仮面の男), the 1998 historical adventure drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich, Gérard Depardieu, and Gabriel Byrne.
Released during the height of Leonardo DiCaprio’s post-Titanic global fame, this Japanese poster is especially collectible for its dramatic double-DiCaprio presentation, promoting the actor’s dual role as King Louis XIV and his imprisoned twin brother.
Film background
Written and directed by Randall Wallace, The Man in the Iron Mask is inspired by Alexandre Dumas’s legendary Musketeers cycle. The film imagines a France ruled by the cruel and self-absorbed Louis XIV, while a mysterious prisoner hidden behind an iron mask may hold the key to restoring justice to the kingdom.
DiCaprio plays both the king and his twin brother Philippe, while the veteran cast portrays the ageing Musketeers: Jeremy Irons as Aramis, John Malkovich as Athos, Gérard Depardieu as Porthos, and Gabriel Byrne as D’Artagnan.
Poster design
This Japanese B2 is a highly dramatic late-1990s star-driven design. The composition is dominated by two large portraits of Leonardo DiCaprio, emphasizing the film’s central dual-role concept: one image cool, elegant, and princely; the other darker and more intense.
At right, the vertical Japanese tagline reads:
「この夏、あなたは2人のディカプリオを目撃する……」
“This summer, you will witness two DiCaprios…”
The accompanying text describes the contrast between the two roles:
「静と動 繊細と大胆 優しさと激しさ」
“Stillness and motion, delicacy and boldness, tenderness and intensity.”
The lower right features the Musketeers standing with drawn swords, while the lower left shows a romantic bedchamber vignette. The Japanese title 仮面の男 is printed in large metallic lettering across the bottom, giving the poster strong theatrical impact.
