“The Man Who Fell to Earth” (地球に落ちて来た男), Original Japanese First Release Movie Poster 1977, Very Rare, B3 Size (c. 36 × 51.5 cm) O639
This is an original Japanese B3 poster issued in Japan for the first domestic theatrical release (1977) of Nicolas Roeg’s cult sci-fi drama The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976)—starring David Bowie in his defining screen role as the alien Thomas Jerome Newton, alongside Rip Torn, Candy Clark, and Buck Henry.
A landmark in 1970s cinema and a cornerstone of Bowie collecting, the film’s reputation has only intensified over time—equal parts science-fiction parable and late-modernist fever dream—now firmly established as a true cult classic.
Poster design
An exceptionally strong Japanese campaign image: Bowie’s iconic, otherworldly pose—strapped into the chair before a wall of televisions—rendered in stark, high-contrast monochrome, with a razor-sharp graphic line slicing the composition like a signal break. The vertical Japanese copy at right heightens the “arrival” mythos: 「宇宙のかなたから はかり知れない衝撃をもって ひとりの男が来た…」 (“From beyond the universe, an immeasurable shock—one man has come…”). The bold red title 地球に落ち来た男 anchors the bottom, creating a perfect collision of cool futurism and 1970s graphic attitude.
A major bonus with this format: the reverse is fully printed with Japanese text, stills, and programme-style layout content (synopsis/cast/features), making it especially desirable as original Japanese theatrical marketing ephemera rather than a standard one-sided poster.
