"The Pornographers", (「エロ事師たち」より 人類学入門), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1966, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA26
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1966 for the first Japanese theatrical release of The Pornographers (「エロ事師たち」より 人類学入門), directed by Shohei Imamura and distributed by Nikkatsu. Loosely based on Akiyuki Nosaka’s writings about small‑time pornographers in post‑war Japan, the film is an early example of Imamura’s interest in society’s margins and the collision between instinct and modernity.
Film background
The story follows a down‑on‑his‑luck photographer who ekes out a living creating erotic “happenings” and peep‑show material, drifting between clients and models while observing the hypocrisies of respectable society. Blending documentary observation with black comedy, Imamura uses the protagonist’s work as an excuse to examine the messy desires and contradictions of everyday Japanese life in the economic boom years, anticipating themes he would explore more famously in later films.
Poster design
The B2 design is framed as a strip of 35mm film, with sprocket holes running down both sides to emphasise the movie‑within‑a‑movie aspect of its subject. A bold red panel across the top carries the Japanese title in large white characters, calling attention to the source material “『エロ事師たち』より” and Imamura’s name in oversized credit. Below, a warm, candid still of a laughing woman fills the centre, suggesting the mix of intimacy and performance at the heart of the story. A second, smaller image at the bottom shows an older man grimacing as a stack of cameras is pressed to his head, hinting at both farce and exploitation. Yellow copy and the Nikkatsu logo complete a striking, film‑strip collage that feels very much of its 1960s moment.
