“Thunderball” (サンダーボール作戦), Original Japanese Re-Release Movie Poster 1974, B3 Size (36 × 51 cm) ZA1181
This is an original Japanese B3 theatrical poster printed in 1974 for the Japanese re-release of Thunderball, the fourth official James Bond film. Directed by Terence Young and starring Sean Connery, Claudine Auger, Adolfo Celi, Luciana Paluzzi, and Rik Van Nutter, the film remains one of the key early Bond spectacles and one of the defining titles of the Connery era.
Film background
Originally released in 1965, Thunderball marked a major escalation in the scale of the Bond series, with its vast underwater action sequences, globe-trotting locations, and SPECTRE-driven plot involving stolen nuclear weapons. It is one of the most important early Bond films: larger, more expensive, and more ambitious than its predecessors, while still retaining the cool, dangerous edge that defined Connery’s interpretation of 007. The score is by John Barry, and the title song, performed by Tom Jones, is one of the most famous in the entire franchise.
By the time of this 1974 Japanese re-release, Bond had become a global institution, and original Japanese posters from these revival campaigns have a particular appeal because they capture the series as it moved from current blockbuster to established cinematic mythology.
Poster design
This is a bold, high-impact Japanese Bond design with excellent period energy. The composition is dominated by a large portrait of Sean Connery holding a spear gun, immediately anchoring the poster in the film’s famous underwater setting. Around him is a dynamic collage of action scenes: divers, explosions, speedboats, vehicles, and the glamorous female lead in a swimsuit, all reinforcing the film’s identity as one of the great large-scale 1960s Bond adventures.
The huge red 007 logo and black Japanese title サンダーボール作戦 give the sheet tremendous graphic force, while the compact B3 format makes it especially attractive as a display piece. Japanese Bond posters are admired for their distinctive layouts, and this one is a particularly strong example: colourful, kinetic, and immediately recognisable.
