This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1991 for the first Japanese release of Toto the Hero (Toto le Héros), the celebrated Belgian fantasy-drama directed by Jaco Van Dormael and starring Michel Bouquet, Jo De Backer, Thomas Godet, and Gisela Uhlen.

Widely regarded as one of the most imaginative and affecting European debut features of its era, Toto the Hero achieved major international acclaim for its inventive structure, emotional depth, and distinctive blend of dark comedy, memory, and fantasy. Japanese posters for the film are particularly appealing for their thoughtful local design and their emphasis on the picture’s festival prestige.

Film background
Released in 1991, Toto the Hero follows Thomas, an elderly man living in a retirement home, who has spent his life convinced that he was switched at birth with his wealthy neighbour Alfred. Haunted by the belief that Alfred stole the life, fortune, and happiness that should have been his, Thomas looks back across the episodes of his childhood and adult life while plotting a late act of revenge.

Directed and written by Jaco Van Dormael, the film was an extraordinary breakthrough and established him immediately as a major new European filmmaker. At the 1991 Cannes Film Festival, the picture won the Caméra d’Or, awarded to the best first feature, and it quickly gained an international reputation for its non-linear storytelling, whimsical visual imagination, and emotionally resonant treatment of regret, memory, and lost possibility.

Poster design
The Japanese B2 design is unusually rich and distinctive, using a panel-based layout that reflects the film’s layered, memory-driven structure. The upper half is dominated by a tender still of young Thomas lying beside his beloved older sister Alice, an image of intimacy and melancholy that immediately establishes the emotional heart of the film.

Across the middle runs a bold magenta title band, carrying the Japanese title 「トト・ザ・ヒーロー」 in large white lettering. Beneath this, the composition breaks into a series of smaller graphic compartments. At centre is a portrait of the older Thomas, lit beneath a lamp, his expression intense and reflective. Around him appear further inset images, including a small circular portrait of his mother, a young Thomas holding a toy aeroplane, and additional stills that evoke the film’s mixture of childhood fantasy and adult disillusionment.

A central yellow panel prominently advertises the film’s Cannes distinction, reading:

“FESTIVAL DE CANNES 1991 / 1991年カンヌ国際映画祭 カメラ・ドール最優秀新人監督賞”

This festival callout gives the sheet a strong period arthouse character and situates it clearly within the international cinema culture of the early 1990s.

The vertical text on the right promotes the narrative in dramatic terms, describing the story of Alice and Thomas, the absent father they wait for, and Thomas’s dream of becoming the great detective “Toto the Hero,” while also stressing the film’s success from Cannes to New York.

At lower right, the original French title TOTO LE HÉROS is preserved, balancing the Japanese title treatment with the film’s European identity.
