This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for Unbreakable / 「アンブレイカブル」, printed for the film’s first Japanese theatrical release in 2001.
Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, Unbreakable stars Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson and is now regarded as one of the most distinctive American thrillers of its period: a restrained, atmospheric, and quietly radical reimagining of the superhero narrative. Released in Japan on 10 February 2001, the film arrived in the immediate aftermath of The Sixth Sense, and Japanese marketing positioned it as another major suspense event from Shyamalan.
Film background Unbreakable follows David Dunn, a Philadelphia security guard who survives a catastrophic train derailment as the sole survivor—and without a single injury. His inexplicable survival draws the attention of Elijah Price, a frail and highly intelligent comic-art dealer who believes that comic-book mythology may reflect hidden truths about the real world.
Rather than presenting superhero material through spectacle, Unbreakable treats the subject with gravity and realism, combining psychological suspense with themes of destiny, identity, and physical vulnerability. In retrospect, it has come to be seen as the first instalment of Shyamalan’s later Eastrail 177 trilogy, preceding Split and Glass.
Poster design The design is strikingly minimal and highly effective. The composition is divided diagonally by a sharp shattered-glass motif, which cuts across the sheet like a physical fracture and visually expresses the film’s central themes of trauma, survival, and hidden strength.
In the upper section, Bruce Willis appears in a cool, blue-toned profile, his face emerging from darkness with a look of tense introspection. In the lower section, Samuel L. Jackson is shown gazing upward, dramatically lit and equally intense. At the centre of the composition, bridging the broken glass line, stands the small silhouette of a lone hooded figure in a rain poncho—an ominous and memorable visual shorthand for Dunn’s solitary journey.
Down the left side runs the Japanese campaign copy, setting out the film’s premise in dramatic stages:
「131人死亡の列車衝突事故で、男はたった1人生き残った。しかも、かすり傷ひとつ負っていない…」 (“In a train collision that killed 131 people, only one man survived. And he did not suffer even a single scratch…”)
Below, the red line 「真実を知る覚悟はあるかー」 (“Are you prepared to know the truth?”) leads into the large white Japanese title 「アンブレイカブル」, underlined in red. The English title UNBREAKABLE appears discreetly below, while the lower margin carries the usual billing block and distributor details.
The overall effect is elegant, dark, and suspenseful—an unusually refined campaign design for an early-2000s studio thriller.
