An original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for the 1970 Japanese release of Melody of Rebellion, directed by Yukihiro Sawada and starring Yoshio Harada, Meiko Kaji, and Tatsuya Fuji. The film opened in Japan on 22 July 1970, and this poster carries the Dainichi Eihai distribution credit.
A distinctive film from Nikkatsu’s New Action era, the story follows an outsider whose loyalties bring him into conflict with powerful criminal organisations. Harada’s long-haired, sunglasses-wearing antihero embodies the rebellious spirit of this period, combining the gangster film with contemporary youth culture and disillusionment.
The Japanese design places Yoshio Harada at its centre through an enormous, amber-tinted portrait. His dark sunglasses and serious expression dominate the background, while the warm yellow and orange palette gives the composition considerable visual impact.
In the foreground, Meiko Kaji appears in a vivid orange trouser suit, holding a pistol at her side. Smaller figures carrying firearms and knives surround her, while a confrontation across the lower portion reinforces the film’s atmosphere of danger and defiance.
The Japanese title descends through the centre in jagged blue and red lettering, cutting across Harada’s portrait. Black vertical promotional text occupies the upper left, with the cast credits along the lower-left margin and Sawada’s director credit towards the right.
The DN / Dainichi Eihai logo connects the poster to the short-lived distribution partnership established by Daiei and Nikkatsu in 1970, adding interest for collectors of Japanese studio history.
