“Wings of Desire” / 「ベルリン・天使の詩」, Original First Release Japanese Movie Poster 1988, Wim Wenders, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) D294

Sale price $185.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for Wings of Desire / 「ベルリン・天使の詩」, printed for the film’s first Japanese theatrical release in 1988.

Directed by Wim Wenders, Wings of Desire — original German title Der Himmel über Berlin — is one of the great European art films of the 1980s, a poetic meditation on memory, love, loneliness, and the divided city of Berlin before the fall of the Wall.

Film background
Wings of Desire follows invisible angels who move through Cold War-era Berlin, listening to the private thoughts of its inhabitants and witnessing the city’s quiet emotional life. When one angel begins to long for human experience — touch, colour, mortality, love — the film becomes a deeply moving reflection on what it means to be alive.

The film is celebrated for its lyrical tone and its remarkable visual language, moving between monochrome and colour to distinguish between angelic observation and human sensation. It won major international acclaim on release, including Best Director for Wim Wenders at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival.

Poster design
This Japanese B2 poster has a powerful, gallery-like composition. The upper image shows a solitary, trench-coated figure seated against the monumental stone face and wing of a statue, with the German title DER HIMMEL ÜBER BERLIN printed across the image panel.

The large Japanese title 「ベルリン・天使の詩」 appears in vivid yellow calligraphy across the deep blue central field. The surrounding text highlights the film’s Cannes recognition and presents the work as a poetic, emotionally resonant masterpiece.

Along the bottom, a sequence of stills previews key moments and moods from the film: circus and trapeze imagery, Berlin street scenes, graffiti, nocturnal interiors, and a central figure framed against the city. These images give the poster a strong sense of atmosphere, balancing melancholy, romance, urban memory, and quiet spiritual mystery.

The overall design is elegant and unusually refined, combining European art-cinema prestige with bold Japanese theatrical typography.
