We have only had the pleasure of seeing this historical advertisement in the Edo-Tokyo Museum. This almost 100 year old poster is an incredible museum grade artifact.
In 1900, Samuel Samuel & Co, which had started in Japan in 1876 by Samuel Samuel as an international trading business in Yokohama, created an independent petroleum division. It subsequently set up Rising Sun Petroleum Co. Ltd (which later became Shell Petroleum) to expand its distribution channels of candles and kerosene for lamps.
This poster is from a era just after Japan opened itself up to the West, prior to this Japan had been a closed and mysterious country for thousands of years run by an Emperor and his Samurai lords.
In the imagery a lady in a traditional Kimono can be seen on the left, whilst a more modernly dressed couple can be seen in a car (a very rare thing in 1930`s Japan).
This poster is almost 90 years old. The condition of this poster is excellent, resembling a painting with vibrant colors and phenomenal artwork.
