"Astro Boy", Original Release Japanese Movie Poster c.1980, B2 Size (51 x 73cm) N104
This is an original Japanese poster printed circa 1980 for the Astro Boy (鉄腕アトム, Tetsuwan Atomu) anime reboot era, featuring artwork by Osamu Tezuka (手塚治虫イラスト).
Astro Boy is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Osamu Tezuka, first serialized from 1952 to 1968. It was adapted into multiple anime series, beginning with the groundbreaking 1963 black-and-white version — the first popular animated TV program in Japan. In 1980, a full-colour reboot aired, introducing a modernised character design, vibrant animation, and updated storylines while retaining the core themes of justice, humanity, and optimism.
This poster was produced by Tezuka Productions during the early 1980s, most likely as part of the promotional campaign for the 1980 colour anime series or related merchandise. The design features a large, close-up portrait of Atom’s smiling face set against a star-filled background, symbolising the tagline at the top: 小さなからだに大きな宇宙 (“A vast universe in a small body”). The lower left corner includes the Astro Boy logo in Japanese and English, along with the Tezuka Productions credit.
It is over 40 years old!
