“Battle for the Planet of the Apes” (最後の猿の惑星), Original Release Japanese Poster 1973, B3 Size (37 × 53 cm) ZA1185

Sale price $120.00

This is an original Japanese B3 theatrical poster printed in 1973 for the first Japanese release of Battle for the Planet of the Apes (最後の猿の惑星), the fifth and final film in the original Planet of the Apes cycle. Directed by J. Lee Thompson, the film stars Roddy McDowall, Claude Akins, Natalie Trundy, Severn Darden, Lew Ayres, and Austin Stoker.

Film background

Released in 1973, Battle for the Planet of the Apes brings the original Apes series to its conclusion. Set after the events of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, the film follows Caesar as he attempts to build a fragile new society in which apes and humans might coexist, even as old hatreds and new threats push that vision toward violence. As the final chapter of the original cycle, it has long held particular appeal for collectors of vintage science-fiction cinema and for those assembling a complete run of original Apes material.

Poster design

This is a bold and highly graphic Japanese design. The composition is dominated by a huge image of Caesar beneath a blazing red-white celestial sky, surrounded by battle scenes, mounted figures, and combat imagery that emphasise the film’s apocalyptic, end-of-series character. The enormous red Japanese title 最後の猿の惑星 has tremendous impact and gives the poster a strong local identity distinct from its American campaign art.

What makes this piece especially interesting is the B3 format with a fully printed reverse. The back is not blank: it contains extensive Japanese text, cast and staff information, and period stills, making the piece both an attractive display poster and a fascinating original campaign document from the film’s first Japanese release.
