"Rocky Chuck the Mountain Rat (Fables of the Green Forest)", Original Release Japanese Speed Poster 1973, Speed Poster Size (c. 26 cm × 75 cm) N51
This is an original Japanese poster printed in 1973 for the first release of Rocky Chuck the Mountain Rat (山ねずみロッキーチャック), screened on 1 August 1973 as part of the Toho Champion Festival (東宝チャンピオンまつり).
Known internationally as Fables of the Green Forest, the television series ran for 52 episodes on Fuji TV from 7 January to 30 December 1973. Produced by Zuiyo Eizo with assistance from Mushi Production for the Calpis Comic Theater (later World Masterpiece Theater), the anime adapts Thornton W. Burgess’s 1910-20s woodland tales. This festival feature compiles key episodes in which the adventure-loving woodchuck Rocky befriends the timid beaver Polly and other forest creatures, teaching lessons of curiosity, cooperation and respect for nature. The film earned a Children’s Welfare Cultural Encouragement Prize the same year.
Poster design
Printed in the tall speed-poster format, this design features:
-
Full-height, full-colour portrait of Rocky in his red vest, greeting viewers against a lush hand-painted forest backdrop.
-
Playful pink katakana title ロッキーチャック running vertically, with orange copy inviting children to “come and play.”
-
Blue vertical text announcing the Children’s Welfare Cultural Encouragement Prize win.
-
Toho studio circle at the top and “Printed in Japan © TOHO Co., Ltd. 1973” in the lower margin confirming first-issue provenance.
Speed posters were produced in far smaller quantities than standard B2s, making surviving examples for 1970s family features exceptionally scarce.
