“Belle de Jour” (昼顔), Original Re-Release Japanese Movie Poster 1972, STB Tatekan Size (51x145cm) O27
This is an original Japanese STB Tatekan poster printed in 1972 for the Japanese re-release of Belle de Jour (昼顔), Luis Buñuel’s landmark 1967 film starring Catherine Deneuve, Jean Sorel, and Michel Piccoli. Based on Joseph Kessel’s novel, the film won the Golden Lion at Venice and is widely regarded as one of the defining works of Buñuel’s career.
The striking Tatekan design juxtaposes Deneuve’s cool, enigmatic profile in black beret and coat against sensual imagery of her character’s secret life. A sultry sepia-tinted still dominates the lower half, while the massive crimson brush title 「昼顔」 slashes vertically across the composition. The bilingual caption “Catherine Deneuve dans Belle de Jour” appears at bottom, paired with the tidy Japanese cast/credit block. The tall STB Tatekan format makes this one of the most impactful Japanese poster designs for the title.
Belle de Jour shocked and fascinated audiences worldwide with its surreal exploration of erotic fantasy and bourgeois repression. In Japan, the film resonated strongly with art-house audiences during the early 1970s revival of European cinema.
This almost 5′ tall STB poster features fantastic artwork that captures the main protagonists wonderfully. The tatekan STB format had much lower print numbers compared to regular Japanese B2s. They are very rare, especially for more popular film titles, and are highly sought after by collectors today.
