“Braindead” (ブレインデッド), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1992, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) H143
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1992 for the first release of Braindead (also known as Dead Alive in North America), Peter Jackson’s notorious New Zealand splatter-comedy cult classic. Produced on a modest budget and initially misunderstood on release, the film’s reputation has only grown—now widely regarded as one of the most extreme (and inventive) gore-comedies ever made, and a cornerstone title for serious cult-horror collectors.
Illustrated by the legendary Hajime Sorayama (空山基), this Japanese poster is widely regarded by collectors as the strongest and most iconic artwork created for the film—and one of the most sought-after Japanese cult movie posters of the era.
Design
A jaw-dropping Sorayama composition: a nurse bound to a chair in a clinical, spotlighted void—blood streaking down—while an enraged infant sits in her lap, also bound, screaming in panic. The perspective is long and corridor-like, heightening the sense of isolation and dread, while the bold red katakana title 「ブレインデッド」 slashes across the lower field like a warning label. At bottom right the credit reads “Illustration by H. SORAYAMA”, confirming authorship. A masterpiece of late-20th-century Japanese poster illustration—equal parts surreal, transgressive, and technically immaculate.
