“Casablanca”, Original Re‑Release Japanese Movie Poster 1962, Size (c. 18 × 26 cm) Q44
This is an original Japanese mini poster for Casablanca, Michael Curtiz’s immortal wartime romance starring Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid, Claude Rains, and Peter Lorre. The film was produced in 1942, first released in Japan in 1946. This particular design is very rare compared to other variants from 1962 re-release.
Film background
Set in wartime Casablanca, the film follows Rick Blaine, the American owner of a nightclub in French Morocco, whose life is upended when former lover Ilsa Lund reappears with resistance leader Victor Laszlo. Directed by Michael Curtiz, Casablanca went on to win the Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay, and remains one of the defining achievements of classic Hollywood cinema.
Poster design
This is a superb and highly elegant Japanese design. Ingrid Bergman’s luminous portrait dominates the upper right, while smaller images of Bogart, Claude Rains, and key dramatic moments unfold below. The huge vertical red Japanese title gives the piece tremendous graphic force, balancing beautifully against the softer blue background and the romanticised studio portraiture. The result is unmistakably vintage and deeply cinematic: a compact but visually powerful Japanese paper item for one of the most beloved films ever made.
Condition
Excellent. Please review the photos—they show the exact poster for sale. The piece presents attractively overall, with good colour and strong vintage character.
