"Babel (バベル)", Original Japanese Movie Poster 2006, First Release, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) N174
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 2006 for the first theatrical release of Babel (バベル), directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu and distributed by Paramount / GAGA in Japan. First release Japanese posters for Academy Award–nominated films of the 2000s remain highly collectible, particularly for works of international ensemble cinema like this.
Film background
Babel is the third entry in Iñárritu’s “Death Trilogy” after Amores Perros (2000) and 21 Grams (2003). The film follows multiple interconnected stories across Morocco, Mexico, the United States, and Japan, exploring themes of miscommunication, tragedy, and cultural divides. Starring Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Gael García Bernal, Adriana Barraza, Rinko Kikuchi, and Kōji Yakusho, the film was acclaimed worldwide. It won the Best Director Award at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, received 7 Academy Award nominations, and won the Oscar for Best Original Score (Gustavo Santaolalla). Rinko Kikuchi’s performance was particularly praised, propelling her to international recognition.
Poster design
The Japanese first release poster features bold vertical typography spelling BABEL across a black background, with portraits of the multinational cast framed inside world-map ovals. The tagline “届け、心。” (“Reach the heart.”) sits prominently at the top, reinforcing the film’s themes of connection and misunderstanding across borders. The Academy Award nomination and Cannes Festival laurels appear at the bottom, highlighting its prestige. The minimalist but striking design reflects both the film’s emotional weight and its global narrative scope.
