“Coffee and Cigarettes” (コーヒー&シガレッツ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 2003, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) P38
A superb original Japanese B2 poster for Jim Jarmusch’s cult anthology Coffee and Cigarettes—a film that has become a genuine touchstone of early-2000s independent cinema and music culture. This is exceptionally difficult to source in Japan, and it’s the first time we’ve had this title in stock in a long time.
Film background
Jarmusch frames a series of deadpan, oddly intimate conversations around a simple ritual: coffee, cigarettes, and the awkward theatre of human interaction. The film’s real pleasure is its tonal precision—quietly funny, slightly melancholic, and always cool—powered by an eclectic roster that blends actors and musicians (from Roberto Benigni and Steve Buscemi to Iggy Pop, Tom Waits, and more), each vignette playing like a miniature short story.
Poster design
A beautifully restrained, graphic Japanese design: high-contrast monochrome photography, clean negative space, and typography that hits like a logo—the bold “コーヒー” with the striking red ampersand. The cast list becomes part of the composition, reading like a curated roll-call of cult cinema and music, while the top image (coffee cup, cigarette, checkerboard table) nails the film’s central mood—time slowing down into conversation.
Rarity and condition
Original Japanese posters for Coffee and Cigarettes are surprisingly scarce, and this one has the added appeal of being a true period piece from the film’s initial release era.
