This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the Japanese release of Con Air / 「コン・エアー」, Simon West’s explosive 1997 action thriller starring Nicolas Cage, John Cusack, and John Malkovich.

Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer during the height of his blockbuster-action era, the film combines an airborne prison escape, an ensemble of dangerous criminals, large-scale practical stunts, and an increasingly spectacular pursuit across the American Southwest.

The Japanese campaign design presents the principal cast beneath the immense, flame-filled silhouette of the prison transport aircraft, creating one of the most recognisable action-film posters of the late 1990s.

Film background

The film follows Cameron Poe, a highly decorated United States Army Ranger who is imprisoned after accidentally killing a man while defending his pregnant wife.

After serving his sentence, Poe is finally granted parole and prepares to return home to his wife, Tricia, and the young daughter he has never met.

He is transported aboard the Jailbird, a specially equipped aircraft carrying some of the United States’ most dangerous prisoners to a new maximum-security facility.

Among the inmates is Cyrus “The Virus” Grissom, an exceptionally intelligent and ruthless criminal who has devised an elaborate plan to seize control of the aircraft. Working with several other prisoners, Cyrus overpowers the guards and transforms the flight into a violent airborne escape.

Poe conceals the fact that he has been paroled and remains aboard the aircraft, hoping to protect the surviving guards and prevent the prisoners from escaping. He also attempts to save his diabetic friend, Baby-O, whose condition is rapidly deteriorating without insulin.

On the ground, United States Marshal Vince Larkin gradually realises that Poe is secretly helping the authorities. As the hijacked aircraft crosses the country, Larkin races to stop the escape while confronting officials prepared to destroy the plane regardless of the hostages still aboard.

The film was directed by Simon West, from a screenplay by Scott Rosenberg, and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.

The principal cast includes Nicolas Cage, John Cusack, John Malkovich, Steve Buscemi, Ving Rhames, Colm Meaney, Mykelti Williamson, Dave Chappelle, Danny Trejo, M. C. Gainey, Nick Chinlund, and Monica Potter.

Con Air became a major international commercial success and remains celebrated for its elaborate action sequences, spectacular practical effects, distinctive ensemble cast, and knowingly exaggerated dialogue.

The film received two Academy Award nominations: Best Sound and Best Original Song for “How Do I Live.”

Poster design

This dramatic Japanese poster is dominated by an intense palette of black, orange, yellow, and metallic silver, presenting the film as an immense airborne inferno.

Across the upper half appears the enormous frontal silhouette of the Jailbird prison transport aircraft, its propellers turning against a wall of fire and smoke.

The aircraft’s dark nose and illuminated blades appear to advance directly towards the viewer. The enlarged scale gives the plane an almost monstrous presence, transforming it into both the film’s principal setting and its central threat.

Below the aircraft, the principal characters stand shoulder-to-shoulder against the flames.

At the centre is Nicolas Cage as Cameron Poe, wearing his white vest and standing with a controlled, confrontational posture.

He is surrounded by John Cusack as Vince Larkin, John Malkovich as Cyrus Grissom, and members of the film’s extensive criminal ensemble. Their arrangement resembles the cast line-up of a war film, while helicopters sweeping through the smoke reinforce the scale of the pursuit.

The central black tagline reads:

Translated:

“Above the clouds, there was hell.”

This concise line captures the film’s central premise: a maximum-security prison uprising unfolding aboard an aircraft thousands of metres above the ground.

The names of the three principal stars appear prominently across the upper edge in large gold lettering:

「史上最悪の CON AIR エアジャック」

Translated:

“The worst CON AIR hijacking in history.”

The English CON AIR logo is incorporated into the line alongside an eagle motif, connecting the Japanese typography with the film’s original international branding.

The lower edge contains the principal cast and production credits, including references to Jerry Bruckheimer, Simon West, Touchstone Pictures, and Buena Vista International Japan.

The result is a quintessential late-1990s Japanese action poster: fiery, densely composed, star-driven, and designed for maximum theatrical impact.

Condition

Near Mint condition. An exceptionally well-preserved example, retaining deep black tones, brilliant orange and yellow colour, sharp photographic detail, clean metallic typography, and superb overall display impact.

There are only extremely minor signs of age or handling consistent with an original Japanese theatrical poster from this period. It would be very difficult to improve upon this example.
