“Dr. No” (007は殺しの番号), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster for the 1962 Film, B2 Size with Attached Theatre Snipe (51 × 95 cm) N159A

Sale price $650.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster produced for the first Japanese theatrical release of Dr. No, the first James Bond film, starring Sean Connery as 007, with Ursula Andress, Joseph Wiseman, and directed by Terence Young. The poster retains its period attached theatre snipe, extending the full display size to approximately 51 × 95 cm.

The original poster from 1962 was used for this double bill with Return of the Seven in 1966.

Design
Explosive early-1960s Japanese Bond design: Sean Connery appears at upper left holding a pistol, while the centre is dominated by a dramatic close-up of a hand gripping a silenced gun. The huge red vertical title 「007は殺しの番号」 — the original Japanese title for Dr. No — drives the composition with enormous graphic force. Smaller action vignettes show Bond-era danger, including a military figure, a fight scene, Ursula Andress in a pale bikini, and Joseph Wiseman as Dr. No.

The blue vertical copy refers to the film’s assassin intrigue and danger-filled setting, including the “three blind mice” killers and the terror of the silenced gun. It is a superb example of how early James Bond was introduced to Japanese audiences: stylish, violent, exotic, and sharply graphic.

Translation of the attached theatre snipe

新装開館 第2弾! — “Grand re-opening, 2nd programme!”

同時上映 続・荒野の七人 — “Shown simultaneously: Return of the Seven

カラー作品 — “Colour feature”

ユル・ブリンナー/ロバート・フラー — “Yul Brynner / Robert Fuller”

25日より ○○テアトル — “From the 25th at ___ Theatre”

The attached snipe is an especially interesting piece of exhibition history, showing that this original Dr. No poster was later used in a Japanese theatre setting as part of a double-bill presentation with Return of the Seven.
