“Teacher’s Pet” (先生のお気に入り), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1958, Clark Gable / Doris Day, B2 Size (c. 51 × 73 cm) — T63
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for the 1958 first Japanese release of Teacher’s Pet, released in Japan as 先生のお気に入り. Distributed by Paramount, this colourful design combines oversized character images, playful expressions and bold lettering to capture the film’s romantic comedy.
Directed by George Seaton, with a screenplay by Fay and Michael Kanin, the film stars Clark Gable and Doris Day, supported by Gig Young and Mamie Van Doren. Gable plays Jim Gannon, a newspaper editor who believes practical experience matters more than formal education. After meeting journalism instructor Erica Stone, played by Day, he conceals his professional identity and joins her class as a beginner. His growing attraction to her turns their professional disagreement into a complicated courtship.
The composition is dominated by a large, cropped image of Mamie Van Doren in a pink two-piece outfit, her back turned toward the viewer. Her figure fills the left side, creating a striking contrast with Gable’s uneasy expression at the lower right. Behind him, Doris Day watches with an amused, knowing glance, neatly conveying the film’s romantic tensions.
A smaller comic vignette appears at the upper right, while a separate portrait of Gig Young occupies a yellow panel near the bottom left. These supporting images add humour without distracting from the central arrangement.
The Japanese title, 「先生のお気に入り」, stretches across the top in enormous yellow brush-style lettering against a vivid red background. Red cast names fill the pale central area, with the VistaVision logo at the upper right and the blue Paramount mountain emblem below. Diagonal pink, green and yellow bands cross the bottom, carrying the English title and production credits.
The promotional line beneath the title reads:
「痛快無比!ダンゼン群を抜くロマンチック・コメディの最高傑作!!」
“Unbeatably entertaining! A romantic comedy masterpiece that stands head and shoulders above the rest!”
The bright palette and expressive character arrangement make this an appealing example for collectors of Clark Gable, Doris Day, Mamie Van Doren and Japanese poster design of the 1950s.
