“Cry of the Hunted” (脱獄者の叫び / Datsugoku-sha no Sakebi), Original Japanese Release Movie Poster 1953, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) P207

Sale price $225.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1953 for MGM’s Cry of the Hunted, directed by Joseph H. Lewis. The Japanese release title 脱獄者の叫び translates to “Cry of the Escapee,” and the poster is a quintessential example of bold Shōwa-era Japanese marketing for imported American crime cinema.

Film background
A gritty crime drama / film noir–leaning thriller, the film centres on a relentless pursuit as law enforcement closes in on an escaped man—driving the story toward a tense, fatalistic showdown. Lewis, celebrated for his taut pacing and hard-edged style, brings a pulpy intensity that fits perfectly with the era’s noir sensibility.

Poster design
A powerful, high-contrast Japanese composition built for instant impact. Vittorio Gassman (left) and Barry Sullivan (right) are locked in a violent close-quarters struggle, framed by stark prison bars that visually trap the scene. The top tagline reads:
「死の沼に刑事と脱獄囚の息づまる斗争!」
—“A breathtaking struggle between a detective and a jailbreaker in the swamp of death!
The English title CRY OF THE HUNTED appears in bold block lettering at left, while Polly Bergen is prominently billed in red Japanese text. The M-G-M mark at bottom right is a great period detail, grounding the sheet firmly as a major-studio release.
