“Flubber” / 「フラバー」, Original First Release Japanese Movie Poster 1998, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA690
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1998 for the first Japanese release of Flubber / 「フラバー」, the Walt Disney Pictures science-fiction comedy starring Robin Williams.
A remake of Disney’s 1961 classic The Absent-Minded Professor, Flubber is a bright late-1990s family comedy built around eccentric invention, slapstick energy, and Robin Williams’ unmistakable comic warmth. This Japanese poster captures the film’s playful identity perfectly, with a bold close-up design centred on Williams and the glowing green invention itself.
Film background
Directed by Les Mayfield and produced / written by John Hughes, Flubber stars Robin Williams as Professor Philip Brainard, a brilliant but absent-minded inventor who accidentally creates a sentient, gravity-defying substance known as Flubber — short for “flying rubber.”
The film follows Brainard as he tries to use his extraordinary invention to save his financially troubled university, while also attempting to repair his relationship with his fiancée. The cast includes Marcia Gay Harden, Christopher McDonald, Raymond J. Barry, and Clancy Brown.
Although critical reaction was mixed on release, the film was a major commercial success and remains a nostalgic favourite for many viewers who grew up with Disney’s late-1990s live-action comedies.
Poster design
The poster is dominated by a large close-up of Robin Williams, wearing thick round laboratory goggles and smiling with a knowingly mischievous expression. In the foreground, he holds a glowing, translucent green piece of Flubber, while floating green bubbles drift across the entire composition.
The top tagline reads:
「すべての夢をかなえます。」
“It fulfils every dream.”
Beneath it, the Japanese copy links the film to Disney and John Hughes’ previous family hit:
「あの『101』から1年—ジョン・ヒューズとディズニーが再び贈る、20世紀最大の映像マジック!」
roughly, “One year after 101 — John Hughes and Disney once again present the greatest screen magic of the 20th century!”
The central yellow copy reads:
「うっかり博士の不思議でステキな大発明。その名は…」
“The absent-minded professor’s mysterious and wonderful invention. Its name is…”
The title 「フラバー」 appears in a rounded, green, futuristic oval logo at lower right, matching the jelly-like visual identity of the Flubber creature itself. Across the bottom, ロビン・ウィリアムズ is printed prominently in large white lettering, with the Disney and distributor credits below.
The overall design is bright, commercial, and unmistakably late-1990s: Robin Williams, Disney family comedy, laboratory invention, and glowing green visual effects brought together in one highly displayable Japanese release poster.
