“Godzilla Minus One” / 「ゴジラ−1.0」, Original Japanese BOAT RACE Ashiya Promotional Tie-In Poster 2023, Rare, B1 Size (73 × 103 cm)
This is an original Japanese B1 promotional tie-in poster produced for the collaboration between Godzilla Minus One and BOAT RACE Ashiya, during the film’s original Japanese theatrical run in 2023.
The poster advertises the Yomiuri Shimbun Cup GⅠ All-Japan Championship, held at Ashiya in Fukuoka Prefecture from 6–11 December 2023, celebrating the racecourse’s 71st anniversary.
A rare and distinctive crossover between Godzilla cinema and Japanese motorboat racing, this large-format design adapts the film’s theatrical imagery with racing boats, water spray, event-specific typography, and a clever reinterpretation of its familiar “G” emblem.
Film background
Written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, Godzilla Minus One opened in Japan on 3 November 2023.
Set in the aftermath of the Second World War, the film follows former military pilot Kōichi Shikishima, played by Ryunosuke Kamiki, as he attempts to rebuild his life while confronting survivor’s guilt. Godzilla’s arrival threatens a country already devastated by war, bringing together civilians determined to resist the monster.
Minami Hamabe co-stars as Noriko Ōishi, with a supporting cast including Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, and Kuranosuke Sasaki.
Combining intimate human drama with destructive spectacle, the film went on to win the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. This poster belongs to its initial Japanese release period, before that international awards recognition.
Godzilla and Japanese promotional tie-ins
Commercial collaborations have accompanied Godzilla since the original 1954 film, including its celebrated Cabton motorcycle tie-in advertising.
Another notable example is the Tokyo Rope promotion for King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962), which also appeared in the large B1 format. These campaigns connected the films with products and businesses beyond the cinema, creating distinctive alternative designs for poster collectors.
The Ashiya collaboration continues that tradition almost seven decades later, bringing Godzilla’s image into the world of Japanese public racing.
Boat racing in Japan
Known as kyōtei, Japanese motorboat racing occupies an unusual position within the country’s sporting culture. Although gambling is generally prohibited, betting on authorised boat races is one of a small number of expressly permitted, publicly managed forms of wagering, alongside horse racing, bicycle racing, and motorcycle racing.
Established under the 1951 Motorboat Racing Act, the sport began holding races in 1952. Its proceeds support local government finances and public-interest activities.
This background gives the poster an additional cultural dimension: it combines a major Japanese film release with a regulated sporting institution rooted in the country’s postwar reconstruction.
Poster design
The composition preserves the theatrical campaign’s distinctive brushstroke-inspired Godzilla emblem, filling its sweeping shape with the monster’s textured skin, jagged dorsal plates, smoke, and glowing embers.
Here, the familiar “G” is paired with a tall “Ⅰ”, linking Godzilla’s visual identity with the event’s GⅠ racing classification. A smaller gold version of this combined emblem appears at the lower left.
Against the pale background, Godzilla’s dark body and fiery orange highlights create a dramatic central focus. The surrounding open space allows the racing imagery and typography to remain clearly visible.
Across the lower half, helmeted drivers crouch over compact racing boats, their silhouettes stretching diagonally through the composition. Visible boat numbers, including 2 and 6, identify them as competitive racing craft. Ripples and stylised spray connect the boats to the water, while a tall splash runs up the right-hand edge.
The vertical headline reads:
「最恐、王者、芦屋、襲来。」
“The most fearsome champion descends on Ashiya.”
The wording links Godzilla’s arrival with the championship contest, with Ashiya highlighted in red.
At the upper left, the film logo appears above:
「大ヒット上映中」
“Now showing—a major hit.”
This directly places the promotion during the film’s theatrical run.
The lower event panel reads:
「読売新聞社杯 開設71周年記念 全日本王座決定戦」
“Yomiuri Shimbun Cup — 71st Anniversary All-Japan Championship.”
The dates 6–11 December 2023 appear prominently beneath, followed by the BOAT RACE 芦屋 branding and supporting sponsor logos. A small line also states that betting tickets may only be purchased by those aged 20 or over.
The result is an imaginative adaptation of the film’s visual identity, with the large B1 format giving both Godzilla and the racing imagery substantial display presence.
