This is an original, ultra-rare Japanese poster, printed in 1958 for the first Japanese release of Equinox Flower (彼岸花, Higanbana), directed by the legendary Yasujiro Ozu. Now over 66 years old, this poster remains in mint condition and has been professionally conservation linen-backed to ensure its long-term preservation.

Equinox Flower is a landmark in Ozu’s celebrated career — his first film in color, and a powerful meditation on generational conflict, changing social values, and the quiet tensions of postwar Japan. Set in 1950s Tokyo, the film follows a traditional father (played by Shin Saburi) who struggles to accept his daughter’s modern approach to marriage. The story unfolds in Ozu’s signature style: restrained, tender, and deeply human.

Widely considered one of Japan’s greatest filmmakers, Yasujiro Ozu directed 44 films over several decades, and his work continues to influence filmmakers worldwide. Equinox Flower holds a special place in his filmography for its quiet emotional strength and its subtle embrace of change.

This country-of-origin Japanese poster is extraordinarily rare and features a classic 1950s design known for its beautifully hand-drawn portraits of the cast and refined, balanced composition. It is one of the most desirable posters for collectors of Ozu’s work and rarely appears for sale on the open market.

We sent this poster from Tokyo to California to be expertly linen-backed by one of the world’s leading archival teams. Their best-in-class conservation ensures it will be preserved for future generations to appreciate.
