Why this collection matters
Historic collaboration – From 1987 to 1999 the late master photographer Irving Penn was given total creative freedom by fashion visionary Issey Miyake. Penn’s studio images, treated graphically by design titan Ikko Tanaka, became the definitive visual language for Miyake’s collections and anchored the landmark exhibition “A‑UN” (Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, 1988).
Direct provenance – These 19 posters come directly from the personal archives of Callaway family, the publishers who produced Issey Miyake: Photographs by Irving Penn (1988) and sponsored the Paris show. They were never commercially distributed.
Museum stature – Identical prints reside in the holdings of the V&A (London), Kyoto Costume Institute, 21_21 Design Sight (Tokyo) and the Irving Penn Foundation. They are increasingly requested for loan to fashion‑photography retrospectives.
Cross‑disciplinary appeal – Each sheet is a fully resolved work of fashion, portrait photography and Japanese graphic design—collectible by poster specialists, photography connoisseurs, design historians and couture archivists alike.
Condition – Stored flat since printing, never folded. Minor handling creases or margin softening only; original colours are fresh and unfaded. Suitable for A‑grade linen‑backing or direct framing in UV acrylic.
