Sale price $110.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1993 for the first Japanese release of Kalifornia (カリフォルニア), the dark and unsettling American psychological road thriller directed by Dominic Sena and starring Brad Pitt, Juliette Lewis, David Duchovny, and Michelle Forbes.

A highly evocative Japanese poster for one of the more memorable American thrillers of the early 1990s, this design has become particularly appealing to collectors for its striking sepia-toned imagery, strong display presence, and the prominence it gives to an early, career-defining performance by Brad Pitt. It is an especially attractive example for collectors of 1990s cinema, crime thrillers, and Japanese release posters for American films.

Film background
Released in 1993, Kalifornia follows journalist Brian Kessler and his photographer girlfriend Carrie, who set out on a cross-country journey to document sites associated with notorious American serial killers. In order to save money, they agree to share the ride with drifter Early Grayce and his young girlfriend Adele—only to realise, too late, that the man travelling with them may himself be a homicidal psychopath.

The film marked the feature directorial debut of Dominic Sena, who would later go on to direct films such as Gone in 60 Seconds and Swordfish. Though modest in commercial terms, Kalifornia was widely noted for its bleak atmosphere, taut psychological tension, and especially for the performances of Brad Pitt and Juliette Lewis. Pitt’s portrayal of Early Grayce remains one of the most disturbing and transformative roles of his early career, while Lewis brings remarkable vulnerability and emotional complexity to Adele. Over time, the film has come to be regarded as a distinctive and unsettling entry in the 1990s American thriller canon.

Poster design
The poster is built around a dusty, sepia-toned palette that perfectly suits the film’s desolate road-movie atmosphere. Dominating the foreground is Brad Pitt as Early Grayce, heavily bearded and unkempt, his downward glance and brooding pose giving the sheet an immediate sense of menace. Above him sits Juliette Lewis on the hood of a car, her pose both alluring and melancholic, reinforcing the film’s uneasy blend of eroticism, danger, and emotional fragility.

In the background, David Duchovny and Michelle Forbes appear seated inside the convertible, the car itself becoming a key visual anchor for the narrative’s deadly journey. Across the top runs a torn road-map motif, a clever design element that emphasises the film’s cross-country setting and the sense of movement into increasingly dangerous territory.

At upper left appears the Japanese line:

「不純物0の愛」
(“A love with zero impurities.”)

This is paired lower down with the striking copy:

「本能のままに生きる男。
その男を盲目的に愛する女。」

(“A man who lives purely by instinct. A woman who loves that man blindly.”)

The typography is particularly effective. The actors’ names appear prominently across the top in both English and Japanese, while the bottom is anchored by the large metallic-gold English title “KALIFORNIA”, with the Japanese title 「カリフォルニア」 rendered in red beneath and beside the director credit. The overall effect is stylish, ominous, and unmistakably of its moment.

Condition
Excellent condition. A very attractive example with clean paper, strong colour, and excellent overall display quality. The subdued tonal range of this design means condition matters greatly, and this copy presents particularly well.
