“Kill Bill: Volume 2” (キル・ビル Vol.2), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 2004, B1 Size (73 × 103 cm) IA28
This is an original Japanese B1 poster printed in 2004 for the first theatrical release of Kill Bill: Volume 2, Quentin Tarantino’s blood-soaked revenge epic starring Uma Thurman, David Carradine, Michael Madsen, Daryl Hannah, and Gordon Liu. Released as the second chapter of Tarantino’s two-part saga, the film shifts from the explosive stylisation of Volume 1 into something darker, more reflective, and more psychologically charged, while still retaining the director’s unmistakable visual flair.
Film background
Released in 2004, Kill Bill: Volume 2 continues the Bride’s path of vengeance as she closes in on the remaining names on her death list: Budd, Elle Driver, and finally Bill himself. Where the first film leans heavily into kinetic action and genre pastiche, Volume 2 broadens the emotional and narrative stakes, drawing on westerns, martial arts cinema, revenge melodrama, and chamber-piece confrontation. For many viewers, it is the more intimate and character-driven half of the Kill Bill project, and together the two films remain among the defining works of Tarantino’s career.
Poster design
This is a superb and highly graphic Japanese release design, and an especially appealing one for collectors because of its conceptual restraint. Rather than using portraiture or action montage, the poster presents the Bride’s famous “Death List Five” on a stark black ground, with the first two names already crossed off and the remaining targets still waiting below: Budd, Elle Driver, and Bill. The handwritten yellow and red lettering gives the image an immediate sense of personality and menace, while the bold Kill Bill Vol. 2 title block at the bottom anchors the sheet with tremendous force.
It is exactly the kind of stripped-back, idea-driven design that makes Japanese posters for major international films so compelling. In B1, the image has real presence: minimal, witty, threatening, and instantly recognisable to anyone who knows the film.
