“Komodo”, Original Japanese Promotional Movie Poster 2000, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) Q56
This is an original Japanese B2 poster issued for the Japanese release campaign of Komodo, Michael Lantieri’s creature-feature about a remote island overrun by giant Komodo dragons. Although the film is a 1999 production, it opened theatrically in Japan on 11 March 2000 through Amuse, and this striking Japanese sheet is best understood as a country-of-origin promotional poster from that release period.
Film background
Directed by Michael Lantieri, with screenplay by Hans Bauer and Craig Mitchell, Komodo stars Jill Hennessy, Billy Burke, Kevin Zegers, and Paul Gleason. The story follows a traumatised boy, his doctor, and a small group of adults who return to the island where his parents vanished, only to confront a new outbreak of giant reptilian terror. Running 89 minutes, the film occupies a distinctive place in late-1990s monster and survival horror cinema, combining creature-feature thrills with practical-effects pedigree from a director best known for his special-effects work.
Poster design
What makes this poster especially desirable is the original artwork by Noriyoshi Ohrai, whose signature is visible within the printed image itself. Rather than using a routine photographic layout, the design erupts into full painted spectacle: a blazing giant Komodo dragon towers amid lightning, fire, and destruction, while the terrified central figure anchors the human scale of the nightmare below. The palette of electric violets, burning oranges, and deep blacks gives the composition tremendous force, and the huge metallic title at the bottom completes a design that feels far grander than the modest B-movie roots of the film. It is a superb example of late-period Ohrai monster art, and for many collectors that alone makes it a highly compelling piece.
