Sale price $475.00

Original Japanese A1 graphic‑design poster, printed 1986
Size: c. 59.4 × 84.1 cm (approx. 23.4 × 33.1 in, ISO A1) • Design: Kazumasa Nagai • Published by PARCO / Galerie Vivant, Tokyo • Offset lithograph

Why this matters

Kazumasa Nagai—one of the defining figures of post‑war Japanese graphic design—created a body of work that bridges modernist restraint and luminous, symbolic imagery. Message from Tokyo encapsulates that synthesis: an abstracted “rising sun” multiplied into a field of radiant emblems over a deep twilight gradient. Large‑format, 1980s Japanese design posters from PARCO/Vivant were printed in modest runs for short campaigns and are increasingly hard to find in this condition and size.

Design & iconography

A midnight‑blue to lavender gradient sky carries a grid of golden half‑sunbursts, each with a soft, falling beam. At center a larger corona erupts into crisp white rays, sending five vertical shafts downward toward a vermilion disc resting on a misted horizon. The only typography—MESSAGE FROM TOKYO—sits in understated gold at the foot, letting the symbols speak. The palette, airbrushed halation, and impeccable spacing are signature Nagai.

Rarity & significance

  • Classic 1980s Japanese poster design at full A1 scale.

  • Scarce original printing credited to PARCO / Galerie Vivant.

  • Powerful wall presence: a calm, iconic composition with bold color and pristine geometry.
