"Midnight Cowboy" (真夜中のカーボーイ), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1969, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) N222
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1969 for the release of Midnight Cowboy, directed by John Schlesinger and distributed by United Artists.
Midnight Cowboy is one of the landmark films of American cinema, telling the story of Joe Buck (Jon Voight), a naive Texan who moves to New York to become a hustler, and his unlikely friendship with Ratso Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman), a sickly con man living on society’s margins. The film’s unflinching portrayal of loneliness, poverty, and survival in the city shocked audiences and critics at the time.
The film received critical acclaim and went on to win three Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay, making it the only X-rated film ever to win Best Picture at the Oscars. Hoffman and Voight both received Academy Award nominations for their performances.
The poster design features an iconic still of Hoffman and Voight on a gritty New York street corner, with bold red Japanese titling 「真夜中のカーボーイ」 contrasting against the dark background. Its stark, urban aesthetic reflects the raw, uncompromising nature of the film itself.
